Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’ ” Exodus 4:1 NKJV
Moses experiences the miraculous. God visits him and gives him instructions. Moses is concerned about whether or not the people will believe him and that he his not eloquent in speech.
I love how God shows Moses miracles that cannot be second guessed. The rod turning into the snake and the leprous hand are sure signs that God is with him. Testimony backed by the power of God.
When God truly gives us a command, we can walk forward in confidence. When we receive instruction and we are afraid, the following is a good reminder of God’s strength.
So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord ? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.” Exodus 4:11-12 NKJV
Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Exodus 3:13-14 NKJV
I believe that over time, we have forgotten how holy God’s name is. I know I do not give Him the respect He deserves. Not only was Moses asked to take off His shoes because of holy ground, I also believe that God’s name itself commands our respect. There are a lot of studies out there that interpret and explain the original Hebrew names of God, such as Yhwh and Elohim. The important thing in these studies is that those names have meanings, both when said and when looked at in writing.
God is our Lord, our Creator, our Saviour. He had many titles that are all meant to exalt the one true God. God says it best to Moses.
Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ Exodus 3:15 NKJV
We need to respect and honor that God is who He says He is. His name is a memorial to all of us.
So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Exodus 3:4-6 NKJV
God is so amazing! The creator of the heavens and the Earth is personal enough to speak directly to Moses that He had heard His people. At the same time, He is so powerful and Holy. Moses is told to take off His shoes because it is holy ground. God did not choose to swarm the Egyptians with an army. He chose Moses (to which Moses basically responded, “Who me?”). God chose a single man and then displayed His mighty power.
